Dr Deirdre Hughes, OBE specialises in lifelong guidance policies, research and practice at an international, national and regional level. Deirdre as a UK expert in lifelong guidance and career edication (European Centre for the Development of Vocational Education, 2017 – present). Deirdre advised the Scottish Government on its new Careers Strategy 2020 and is currently working with Careers Wales and the Welsh Government on a new 5-year vision and strategy for Careers Wales. She is currently working on a major labour market skills’ forecasting project in Northern Ireland and Chairs SkillsNI. Deirdre is also chairing a major review of the UK matrix quality standard for information, advice and guidance. She is prolific writer, researcher and policy adviser promoting equality, diversity and inclusion. Deirdre is Director of dmh associates and an Associate Fellow at the University of Warwick, Institute for Employment Research (IER). She is Co-Editor of the British Journal for Guidance and Counselling: International Symposium Series. She is passionate about improving careers support for young people and adults, family and learning to play the piano.



Labour market uncertainty: managing risk and coping with change

The world has changed significantly in the last year. As a result of the global pandemic, societies everywhere have had to adapt in ways we could not have previously imagined. 

Global evidence shows economic disruption is being felt most acutely by young people. There is a growing need to redouble career counselling efforts and avoid negative education, economic and social consequences for people, jobs, productivity and growth. In ‘VUCA’ times managing risk and coping with change is not easy. New strategies and approaches are required. Careers support services will be in demand as individuals strive to adapt and prosper.
